<![CDATA[ Gamesradar+ ]]> https://www.gamesradar.com Fri, 09 Aug 2024 09:32:07 +0000 en <![CDATA[ Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot (76993) review: "Laser-targeted at kids who want to play and get creative" ]]> Lego's entire Sonic range is a beautiful dose of nostalgia for so many, and the little touches of detail in this action-focused Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot set will tick a lot of fan boxes. From the tiny little creatures that 'turn into' robots, to the towering Death Egg Robot itself, this set has a lot of personality - and kicks serious butt.

Whether you'll be happy with your younger Lego builders wielding this set unsupervised is certainly a question I'm not qualified to answer. It isn't one of the best Lego sets of all time, either. But it's certainly going to create some fun storylines as you put Sonic up against his age-old nemesis Dr. Eggman in this set.

Features & design

 • Features a robot, minifigs, & accessories
 • Relatively small in size
 • Fun interactive touches

The Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot set is only 615 pieces but feels like a lot more because you're building lots of smaller elements to round out this imaginative set. I personally find the fact it's not contained within one build a bit frustrating purely for display purposes, but this set is laser-targeted at kids who are going to play and get creative with this set.

There are so many little nods to the original Sonic games with this set, from the little lab where animals can be turned into Dr. Eggman's bots to the golden ring floating on a see-through plinth, that this makes for a great set for the entire family to enjoy too. Not necessarily one of the best Lego sets, but fun nonetheless.

 • Takes around 2.5 hours
 • Fairly straightforward build
 • Some more complex elements

Because there are so many smaller elements of the Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot set to build alongside the larger, more complex Death Egg Robot, it makes this a wonderfully varied build. I particularly liked that there's a variety in pace to proceedings, starting with the smaller bits as almost a warm-up to the main event, which is definitely the mech itself.

What's interesting about that part of the build though is the fact you build smaller sections at a time and then click them onto the mech. It keeps things feeling fun, and keeps you guessing as to how it's all going to fit together. The working weaponry is also fascinating from a mechanical point of view too.

I'm still not entirely sure how successful the middle portion of the mech actually is though. The build book outlines that you should be able to slam the back portion in to cause the front panel to fly off and ideally into the incoming Sonic, but no matter how hard I try (and I even got my partner involved) that front section isn't budging for me. I've even ensured that I've actually put everything together correctly and rebuilt it again, but to no avail. If I'm not strong enough - or potentially smart enough - to figure it out then I doubt little builders will have any chance.

One other odd little quirk was that the build instructions stated the turtle and second bird were in bag three, but were actually in bag five. That's not a huge deal, but I did worry that they'd been lost as I emptied the bags onto my coffee table.

 • Plenty of interactive elements
 • No way to cohesively store all the elements
 • Mech is seriously cool

I was delighted to discover how many little characters you get with the Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot set. The Sonic minifig is an excellent rendition of the Blue Blur, but then you also get the heavily mustachioed Dr. Eggman, and there's also the surprise addition of building a quirky robot minion for him too. The trio of critters makes for cute bonus friends for this set as well.

The best thing about the Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot set is how creative you can get with the storytelling. Sonic in his speed sphere can be launched directly at Dr. Eggman in his robot mech suit, via the spikes and ramps that are also included as part of the build. Then the Death Egg Robot itself is armed to the teeth, with a working minigun-esque arm that fires out studs with alarming speed and range. Seriously, they could take an eye out, which may well be a concern for parents. It does work impressively well though, and certainly adds to the drama of the boss battle this set creates.

As mentioned before, the Death Egg Robot also comes with a mechanism that lets you push away incoming attacks, but despite it all being built correctly, I just can't get it to function properly, which is frustrating – and would no doubt be more so for kids.

Of course, there are also the added extras with this set outside of Sonic and Dr. Eggman. There's also a little sciencey montage where you can let Dr. Eggman turn Sonic's little pals - an adorable turtle and duo of birds - into robots. Or you could, of course, let Sonic turn them back into critters again. All those features, plus the added elements, including a gold ring, make this set really interactive and I could imagine kids having hours of fun building a story around the battle that's about to ensue.

Should you buy Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot (76993)?

Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot set ticks a lot of boxes. It's a nostalgic build for the whole family. The attention to detail is a fantastic celebration for Sonic fans, while the interactivity makes it a great joy for all kinds of Lego enthusiasts to enjoy. It might not be the most display-worthy set in full, but there's something for everyone with this action-packed build.

Buy it if...

✅ You want something the whole family can enjoy
The set is a great nostalgia driver thanks to its attention to detail in the build, but the fact its perfect for actually playing with and creating stories with makes it perfect for kids too.

✅ You don't want a demanding build
Completed in just a few short hours, this is a great build for those not looking to lose an entire weekend to clicking blocks together. It's quick to make and quick to enjoy too.

Don't buy it if...

❌ You want something to display
While the mech itself is a fun thing to whack on your shelf, it's a set full of smaller, fiddlier pieces that don't really lend themselves well to one cohesive display piece.

You are concerned about weaponized Lego
I'm half-joking here, but that mini-gun arm on the Death Egg Robot is a high-speed mechanism that, in the wrong hands, could deal a stud to the eye.

How we tested Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot (76993)

I built the Lego Sonic vs. Dr. Eggman's Death Egg Robot set on one rainy Saturday afternoon watching the Handmaid's Tale - I know, what a juxtaposition. I assessed the ease of the build, how straightforward the instructions were, and how satisfying the build was overall to complete.

<![CDATA[ I really need fellow 90s kids to see this Lego Super Mario World set ]]> A Lego Super Mario World set featuring the plumber riding his dino-steed Yoshi is on the way, and SNES fans like me really need to check it out.

Revealed following a leak that had already started to set the internet alight, Lego Super Mario World: Mario & Yoshi recreates the pair as they appeared in the sidescrolling 1990 game of the same name - complete with moving limbs and a tongue that shoots out (presumably to grab those tasty 16bit apples). This is all operated by a handle at the back, giving your decor something of a party trick. Not many of the best Lego sets can do that.

You can get the full lowdown on the Lego Super Mario World set below, but it'll hit shelves this October 1 and is available to pre-order now at the official Lego store. That means it'll be launching on the same day as the new actual Lego Fortnite sets (including the most unsettling kit I've ever seen).

Unlike so much of the Lego Super Mario range, this is a for-adults kit primarily designed to look cool on your shelf rather than being a 'playset' in the traditional sense. Well, sort of - as per the Lego NES, turning the handle will bring it all to life. To be precise, Yoshi's legs and arms will move as if he's running along the model's pixellated base. His tongue also pops out on command, just like it did in the SNES game.

Mario himself doesn't seem to move, but look into his eyes. I bet he's thinking about jumping off Yoshi mid-way over a chasm, the monster. I don't know about you, but I never used to do that. No sir.

While all this is undeniably neat, something that took me by surprise about this kit is its size. Yes, it's over 1,000 pieces strong. But it's also 15.5in (40 cm) high, so isn't in danger of vanishing into the background.

Available October 1 - You can already put money down on this new set a couple months early, and even though it's only available at the Lego store right now, there's no mention of it being an exclusive. That means it's likely to be available at Amazon, Walmart, and the rest before long.View Deal

<![CDATA[ Actual Lego Fortnite sets are on the way, including the most unsettling kit I've ever seen ]]> It always seemed strange that we didn't get any Lego Fortnite sets to go with the video game crossover, but it looks as though the toy company was biding its time - four new kits have just broken cover.

This handful of Lego Fortnite sets cover all the big hits you'd expect; the Battle Bus, Loot Llama, Durr Burger, and a truly haunting version of Peely. (Seriously, am I the only one who finds it unsettling?) These run the gamut of prices, from $15 / £13 at the low end to the more ambitious $100 / £90 kit. After covering the best Lego sets for years, I was pleasantly surprised at these price tags - I was expecting the upper band to be higher. Instead, they're in line with the pretty reasonably-priced Animal Crossing range.

You can get a look at the full range for yourself (and pre-order them) at the official Lego store, but here's a more detailed breakdown of these new Fortnite Lego sets.

The tentpole set for Lego Fortnite is, of course, the Battle Bus. This vehicle is our ticket into matches during the video game, so it's only fitting that it should get the biggest kit of the initial wave. Not that it's particularly complex in terms of size; it weighs in at just under 1,000 pieces, so shouldn't be a headache for younger builders.

Alongside the bus itself (which seems able to actually detach from the balloon), you're getting nine minifigures based on Fortnite's most recognizable characters - the Adventure variant of Peely, Cuddle Team Leader, Meowscles, Raven, Brite Bomber, Battalion Brawler, Cube Assassin, Trespasser Elite, and Drift.

Naturally, lots of accessories will be included here too. That apparently includes the obligatory pickaxes, a Grappler, Slurp Juice, and Slap Juice.

Available October 1 - This kit is likely to be amongst the most popular ones for fans, but you'll need to visit Lego to get ahold of it. Like all of the other sets, this is a Lego store exclusive.View Deal

Much like the Battle Bus, it'd feel plain wrong if Fortnite's Llama wasn't included in the range. Luckily, Lego agrees - and this surprisingly big kit is the result. Coming in at 9.5in (24cm) high and just shy of 700 pieces strong, the Supply Llama is a display piece with a moving head and openable mouth.

As you'd expect with a name like that, the Supply Llama is also hiding some handy Fortnite loot including Slurp Juice, dynamite, Rough Ruby, a Grappler, and a Good Luck Charm.

Lego Supply Llama | Preorder at Lego
Available October 1 - Like all of the other Lego Fortnite kits, this one is exclusive to the official Lego store. Does that mean it won't ever appear at Amazon and the rest? Never say never, but to begin with, you'll struggle to find it anywhere else.View Deal

This is the only strictly 'for adults' kit in the Lego Fortnite range, and it's not a playset like the others. Even though the others can be put on display and will look mighty fine if so, Peely Bones - based on the in-game skin of the same name - is exclusively made to sit on a shelf.

Honestly, this one freaks me out a bit. It's cool, yes, and is much bigger than expected. But also... man, that's a banana with a skeleton. Which is sticking out.

In the immortal words of Randy Jackson, it's gonna be a no from me, dawg.

This lil guy is the cheapest and easiest to build of all the Lego Fortnite sets. At 190-odd pieces and a cost of $14.99 / £12.99, it's seems poised to become the perfect gift or stocking stuffer for Fortnite fans this Christmas.

Also, look at those fun googly eyes. Who knew Lego bricks could have so much personality?

Prime Day Lego deals: FAQ

Amazon Prime Day logo

When will Prime Day Lego deals 2024 end?

Prime Day Lego deals have landed and will run until the end of July 17. Although Prime Day started on July 16, sales actually started earlier, at the end of June to be precise.

Do I need a Prime membership for the Prime Day Lego deals?

Unfortunately, you do need a Prime membership to access the best Prime Day Lego deals. The most tempting offers are just for subscribers.

You shouldn't worry about missing out, though. Some discounts are available to everyone, membership or not, and plenty of the competition are providing their own sales around the same time.

You can get a 30-day free trial of Prime as well. If you grab it now, you'll be able to access all the best Prime Day Lego deals before cancelling when that period is up.

Amazon Prime | 30-day free trial
Many of the best offers are limited to Prime members, so you'll need to sign up if you want to take advantage of them. Fortunately, there's a free trial to get you in the door without having to pay a penny... and it should cover you for the duration. Just remember to cancel before the rolling monthly $12.99 / £7.99 fee kicks in if you don't plan on sticking around.

Should you wait for Black Friday?

Should you take advantage of this year's Prime Day Lego deals, or should you wait until the bigger sales event in November? Honestly, the answer depends on the set itself. Some (like the Millennium Falcon, or those advent calendars) tend to get their biggest reductions during Black Friday. But others don't follow the same rule. Your best bet is to check in with price matching sites such as CamelCamelCamel and take a quick look at the item's history. If it's not had a real discount for ages and has tumbled massively for the Prime Day Lego deals, you should grab it. If it often reaches the same price, has had the same 'reduction' for months, or traditionally gets a saving for November and December, we'd say to hold fire.

Prime Day Lego deals: What to expect

A Lego Millennium Falcon being held alongside an image of an Animal Crossing island set

Even though the best offers tend to be reserved for Amazon technology or Prime Day laptop deals, that isn't to say savings on Lego aren't available. In fact, you can get a huge amount of money off sets if you know where to look - it's not uncommon to see lowest-ever prices during the sale.

Based on Primes of years past, anything older than a few months is game to receive a price cut. Mid-range and cheap sets are probably going to get the lion's share of savings because they usually do... but that isn't to say big ticket items won't get any love. While very popular sets like Rivendell or the Ultimate Collector Series tend to be held back for flash sales in November, we have seen a couple of premium kits drop substantially as part of the annual Prime Day Lego deals. For example, the Rise of Skywalker Millennium Falcon tumbled to an impressive $127.99, which at the time was a record low.

Speaking of kits like the Falcon, we expect the most tempting offers to be on major franchises such as Star Wars. Even though all things Lego get their prices slashed during the event, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, Super Mario, Minecraft, and the rest take the lion's share in our experience. Mosey on over to Amazon's sales page this July and you'll probably find them dominating the list.

The Animal Crossing series is likely to be slashed in 2024

In all honesty, we'd expect Lego Star Wars sets to steal most of that spotlight. These always seem to get the majority of reductions and are amongst the most popular sets overall, so it stands to reason that they'll be highlighted again this time around. More specifically, for-adults dioramas like the Emperor's Throne Room or mid-range kits such as the X-Wing are sure to drop in price because they always do. We've yet to see a year where Boba Fett's ship or the helmets line haven't been discounted, for instance.

This is what gives us hope that the newly-launched Starship collection (featuring everything from the Millennium Falcon to the Tantive IV) will be included in 2024's discounts. They'll have been out for a couple of months by the time Prime Day rolls around and cost less than $100 / £100 on average, so they fit the mold established by previous sales. Sure, the reductions may not seem huge. But chances are, they'll be the biggest cuts we'll have seen to date on these new models.

In much the same way, we expect many of the recent Harry Potter kits (like Hagrid's Hut) to dip during 2024's Prime Day Lego deals as well. They'll have a few months under their belt and haven't been discounted in any big way before, so will probably enjoy a reduction if previous sales are an indication. Similarly, we could see a lowest-ever price for the Hogwarts Castle and Grounds kit. We've had some savings on the reasonably-sized display piece before, but nothing outrageous. This sale will be the first real opportunity for that, and we'd be surprised if Amazon didn't take it.

That means the Animal Crossing series is likely to be slashed in 2024 too. These kits haven't had any significant reduction yet and launched early this year, so are due a discount by all accounts.

<![CDATA[ I'm surprised to see the best Lego Star Wars sets get such good discounts for Prime Day ]]> The Lego UCS Millennium Falcon kit, AKA one of the most popular and highly-desired Lego sets out there, just got hit with a massive price cut. In the immortal words of Lando Calrissian, "hello, what have we here?"

You can pick up the set for £533.89 at Amazon rather than £734.99, which is a saving of £201 overall and is just a pound off the kit's lowest ever price. Considering how rarely it reaches that record low, this saving is more than a little noteworthy. Meanwhile, US shoppers can grab it for a helpful but slightly less eyebrow-raising $799.99 at Zavvi instead of $849.99. While that's only a $50 reduction in the latter's case, it's the first real saving on the Lego UCS Millennium Falcon in weeks.

This isn't the only Falcon enjoying a bargain either. The newer, smaller Lego Millennium Falcon kit is currently £56.98 at Amazon rather than the usual £74.99 (literally a few pence off its lowest ever price). Similarly, the mid-range Rise of Skywalker Falcon is also a stone's throw away from a record low at £95.19 via Amazon instead of £150. In other words, you've got options if you don't fancy dropping hundreds on the bigger version.

No matter what, this bodes well for 2024's Prime Day Lego deals - the sale is bringing its A-game, which it often holds back for Black Friday.

Should you buy the Lego UCS Millennium Falcon?

A side-on view of the Lego UCS Millennium Falcon, bathed in a purple light

Seeing as 'Lego Millennium Falcon' is one of the most searched terms during sale season where Lego is concerned (at least according to my research), there's clearly no shortage of interest in it. And that's fair enough. While each version is impressive enough, the Ultimate Collector Series model has them all beat. This enormous kit weighs in at over 7,500 pieces and is comfortably one of the biggest and best Lego sets ever made. That leaves a lot of room for detail, and Lego has made the most of it with a jam-packed interior, numerous minifigures from across the saga, and a hodge-podge chassis which nails the ship's cobbled-together feel. It's exactly what a Star Wars fan would want from a Lego Millennium Falcon. As we said in our Lego UCS Millennium Falcon review, "it’s difficult to imagine a Lego version of this ship looking any better."

All that makes for a pretty jaw-dropping result, and the model will dominate any space - or conversation - it's a part of. However, that is admittedly a double-edged sword. If you don't have lots of room at home, finding a way to display this monster can be tricky. It's not necessarily a deal-breaker, but it is something to keep in mind.

I can't avoid talking about the price, either. Even with a discount, this is a very expensive set. If you're happy with the smaller, cheaper versions, it's difficult to recommend the UCS kit over them.

Still, I'd argue that this is amongst the best Lego Star Wars sets - it's somewhat legendary in its scope and ambition. Because it might be retired in the not so distant future, it's also in its twilight years.

<![CDATA[ Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts Express hits its lowest ever price with magic discount I can't resist ]]> September 1 may be a ways off, but you can still get to Hogwarts ahead of the magic school's new school year with this record offer - the Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts Express and Hogsmeade Station set has never been cheaper.

Following some price drops earlier in the month, this version of Lego Hogwarts Express has tumbled even more to $106 at Amazon rather than $129.99. So far as I'm able to tell, that's the cheapest it's ever been. I've not been able to find the Lego Harry Potter set for less anywhere else, either.

Annoyingly, the UK doesn't have an equivalent discount. I'll keep an eye out and update this story if and when a saving rears its head.

Considering how this year's best Prime Day Lego deals haven't officially kicked off yet, that's not bad. Hopefully that means we'll get even better offers once the sale gets into gear over the next couple of days.

Prime Day Lego deals at a glance

Save $24 - Before this discount, the lowest price I'd seen for the Hogwarts Express kit was roughly $120. It then fell to $113.99 before the weekend and has now dropped even more ahead of Prime Day. It could dip further, but I doubt it; that's already a great saving.

Should you buy the Lego Hogwarts Express Train Set with Hogsmeade Station?

Savings aside, there are a couple of things to consider where this kit is concerned. To start with, it's worth mulling over whether this is the version you want. At the time of writing, there is another Lego Harry Potter set that recreates the train in all its glory - the Lego Hogwarts Express Collector's Edition. This one is 5,000 pieces strong so has more room for detail, and it's definitely a 'for display' piece rather than a playset. Its carriages also include scenes from Sorcerer's Stone through to the Deathly Hallows epilogue, complete with quotes and minifigures specific to those eras.

However, all that bricky goodness comes at a literal cost. This mega-kit is usually nearer $500, and even though you can currently get it for $440 at Amazon, that's still a lot more expensive than the Hogsmeade Station set. Around $330 more, to be precise.

Speaking of which, let's talk about the smaller Hogwarts Express that's currently on offer. This kit may have fewer pieces to its name (just over 1,000), but it still manages to make the most of that real estate; it captures the feel of the iconic train despite being dinky in comparison to its Collector's Edition sibling. Plus, it features Hogsmeade Station itself alongside minifigures from the early movies. If you adore Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, you'll appreciate the inclusion - it seems to be based on the first film's conclusion. That also makes it a fun display piece for your shelf; it very much tells a story.

Seeing double

If you've seen yet another Hogwarts Express out there, that's because you're looking at the now-retired Prisoner of Azkaban version. I like this one due to the inclusion of King's Cross and a Dementor, but it's overpriced these days due to being hard to find.

Looking for a playset to buy for younger fans, on the other hand? This cheaper kit still wins, if you ask me. It's a lot more affordable, yes, but it's also much easier to build - anyone aged 8 and up should be OK putting it together. Meanwhile, the Collector's Edition has an 18+ recommended rating due to its higher complexity, the patience needed for what can be a repetitive task, and its purpose as a purely hands-off display piece. It is one of the best Lego sets around, but it's also a hefty commitment that will leave a hole in your bank account.

In other words, I'd definitely recommend grabbing this cheaper kit unless you're absolutely dead set on having the biggest and showiest version - you'll still be very happy with what you get here.

<![CDATA[ Lego Millennium Falcon hits lowest ever price, and I'd say fans need it in their life ]]> The new Lego Millennium Falcon set has hit a record low price ahead of the weekend.

You can currently get your hands on the kit for $77.58 at Amazon instead of $85, and it's never been cheaper. In fact, that seems like the Lego Millennium Falcon set's first big discount after it launched a few months ago.

Meanwhile, UK fans are facing down an even bigger saving; the kit is on offer for £59.99 at Amazon rather than the usual £74.99. So far as I can tell, you won't be able to find it for less anywhere else - at the time of writing, at least.

I say that because reductions are flying thick and fast right now. As an example, another Lego Millennium Falcon (the one based on Rise of Skywalker, AKA the middle of the three kits Lego makes) is just a few dollars away from its lowest ever price at Amazon right now. Which makes sense; this year's Prime Day Lego deals are just around the corner, so bigger discounts are starting to rear their heads.

Lego Millennium Falcon | $84.99 $77.58 at Amazon
Save $7 - Even though that doesn't necessarily feel like much of a discount at first glance, it's actually a much better deal than you might think. The Lego Millennium Falcon hasn't ever been so cheap, at least not that I've been able to tell, so it's well worth your time (and credits).

Buy it if:
✅ You want the most iconic Star Wars ship
✅ You don't want to break the bank
✅ You don't have room for the bigger versions

❌ You'd prefer to pay more for a bigger Falcon
❌ You're looking for a playset for your kids

Should you buy the Lego Millennium Falcon?

As I mentioned in my Lego Millennium Falcon (75375) review, I really do think this will be the best version of Han Solo's iconic ride for most people. Although there are bigger and arguably better ones (such as the Lego UCS Millennium Falcon), these alternatives have an equally large price tag. In fact, the Ultimate Collector kit I just mentioned is roughly $600 / £500 more. And that's when it's discounted. It may be amongst the best Lego sets, but oh boy are you paying through the nose for it.

Similarly, it's a better size for the majority of folks. The other Lego Millennium Falcons are far bigger and take up loads of space, whereas this sits nicely on a shelf or desk. Is it as detailed or impressive as its older siblings? Not necessarily. However, she's got it where it counts. I was impressed by the level of detail on display here in spite of it being shrunken down, and the kit perfectly captures the essence of what makes this ship so beloved. Having an actual display stand is another advantage, helping it look a bit more like a purposeful decoration. Honestly, I think it's one of the best Lego Star Wars sets we've had in a while.

<![CDATA[ It's-a-me, a bargain: Lego Piranha Plant hits record low price ]]> One of my favorite Lego sets of the year, the Lego Piranha Plant, has tumbled to a record-low price ahead of the weekend.

US readers can currently pick up the villainous pot plant for $53.99 at Amazon instead of $60. Meanwhile, UK fans can grab the Lego set for £43.49 via Amazon rather than £57.99. Either way, that's the Lego Piranha Plant's lowest price. I've never seen the kit get such a big discount Stateside, and it's only received that discount once across the pond.

It's unclear how long this offer will last, but it suddenly feels like we don't have to wait until this month's Prime Day Lego deals to snag a bargain.

Lego Piranha Plant | $59.99 $53.99 at Amazon
Save $7 - It may not seem like a massive saving at face value, but we've literally not seen this kit any cheaper at any point… and it's not come anywhere close, either.

✅ You're a Super Mario fan
✅ You want something for your desk or a gift

Should you buy the Lego Piranha Plant?

This kit looks great in pictures, but it's even better in person. The Lego Piranha Plant is full of character despite only being 540 pieces strong.

While some may have preferred a larger, more articulated version, its modest size makes it a fairly stress-free build. Even if you're not a diehard Lego builder and don't have the best Lego sets on your shelf at home, you'll get on well with this one. Indeed, members of the GamesRadar+ team have bought the kit for themselves… and a Lego Piranha Plant actually sits on the desk next to me in the office. Seeing it and its goofy grin always cheers me up.

Actually, I think that the only Super Mario set able to match it is the (much larger) Mighty Bowser.

Will it drop further in price? Possibly, but I can't see that happening until a major sale. And even then, my answer depends on where you are in the world. It could dip even more in the UK because the Lego Piranha Plant has enjoyed a few discounts there before, but in the US it's only just reached that level. As such, I'd be surprised if it dropped much more when Amazon's Lego deals get started later this month.

<![CDATA[ You're gonna need a bigger shelf, because Lego Jaws just arrived ]]> The Lego Jaws set has officially broken cover, and it's a monster.

A diorama with almost 1,500 pieces under its belt, the Lego Jaws set has two different display options; you can either let the shark loose on the heroes' boat (the Orca, complete with minifigures for the beast to chow down on) or show it off on its own stand.

No matter how you choose to terrorize the brick seas, Lego Jaws will be available to pre-order from early August for $149.99 / £129.99 at Lego. If you're a member of the free Insider program (e.g. you've signed in to the Lego store), you'll be able to grab it from August 3. Everyone else will have to wait until August 6 like the salty sea dogs they are.

Let's get a closer look at this behemoth, shall we?

Much like the D&D set from earlier this year, Lego Jaws was conceived by a fan as part of Lego Ideas (whereby users submit designs that might be turned into an actual kit if they receive enough votes). That outside perspective might be why it does something a little different to the best Lego sets. Unlike other dioramas, this feels like a two-in-one; there's the classic 'action' scene, complete with a quote plaque, and the separate shark display.

Fans of the movie will immediately recognize the former: it depicts the good ship Orca on a bricky sea base, complete with a submerged shark rearing up to take a bite. Crewed by minifigure versions of the film's main characters (Police Chief Brody, old sea dog Quint, and marine biologist Hooper), the roof can be removed to reveal a cabin crammed with references and accessories. The craft, which is big enough to hang over the base's edge, also has an adjustable boom and rigging.

However, if you'd prefer something a little more understated, you can show off the shark in all its glory on a separate stand that comes with the Jaws logo.

You can see all this in action during Lego's 90-second film that recreates the movie's most memorable moments… albeit with a family-friendly Lego spin.

The fan that originally dreamt up this idea, Johnny Campbell, says "Jaws is my favorite movie of all-time, so I really wanted to recreate it in Lego bricks. Lego building has always been a part of my life in some shape or form but in order to get all of the finer details, I actually freeze-framed Jaws as I watched it so that I could catch a glimpse of the finer details taking notes as I went along. It is just mind-blowing that my design is now an official Lego set. I can't wait to stand in a Lego shop looking at the shelves and seeing a set that I have been involved with and watching someone buying it. It’s every Lego fan’s dream!"

Although the Jaws set won't feature in the sale, there will definitely be some must-have discounts in this month's Prime Day Lego deals. I'd be surprised if that didn't include reductions on the best Lego Star Wars sets.
