<![CDATA[ Gamesradar+ ]]> https://www.gamesradar.com Fri, 09 Aug 2024 10:19:55 +0000 en <![CDATA[ Ryan Reynolds posts a perfect goodbye to Chris Evans' Johnny Storm after Deadpool and Wolverine cameo ]]> Ryan Reynolds has posted the first official look at Chris Evans' cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine, sharing the perfect goodbye to the character. Posting on Instagram, the Wade Wilson star thanked Evans for joining the movie – and elaborated why it was so important to bring him back one last time.

"Part of the movie's theme is saying goodbye… And one of the gifts of working on the film is that we got to say goodbye on different terms," he wrote. "Seeing Johnny Storm (if only for a short while) was like seeing someone you miss come back from the dead in a dream. Way too brief and too lovely to be real. Goodbyes are hard. It was hard saying goodbye to Chris Evans' Johnny Storm. But at least we got to actually say it this time."

Reynolds then went on to reference Storm's grisly demise in the movie in a perfectly Wade Wilson way. "On the other hand, it wouldn’t have been necessary if he hadn't run his fat-ass mouth around Cassandra," he quipped, referencing the Deadpool and Wolverine post-credits scene. "Or if she hadn't zip-zapped his skin, leaving his organs to splash crudely onto the ground, while the soil greedily drank his blood. It was horrible."

The actor ended his post with an apt send-off for the Fantastic Four character. "Jonathan Lowell Spencer Storm: We love you. Wherever you are, I'm sure you're thriving. #FlameOff". We're not crying, you are.

<![CDATA[ One of World of Warcraft: The War Within's beta's most-beloved features turns out to be a bug that Blizzard is fixing, and folks aren't happy ]]> A World of Warcraft developer has confirmed that The War Within's beta rewarding players with appearance items linked to the race they're playing was actually a bug, and it'll be fixed.

Back when The War Within was in beta, players were somewhat pleasantly surprised with the fact that their characters were rewarded with cosmetic items that they couldn't equip. Elves were being granted items for quests that only dwarves could kit themselves out in, for example, but it turns out this was all a mistake on the part of World of Warcraft.

"I'm afraid that this is incorrect, and was most likely a bug during the beta. Sorry," a post from a Blizzard developer reads on the studio's forums, in response to a player writing that they were able to get items for a race unrelated to their character. The responses from Blizzard forum users to the revelation from the developer isn't positive.

"That is enormously disappointing. I was extremely excited to do a Loremaster and gain all the quest reward mogs this way. I feel very deflated now," reads one response. "Unfortunately we created a good thing that everyone liked. It is now been fixed and removed. Have a bad day," adds another forum user mimicking Blizzard's response.

Some users are confused, because they perceived comments made from associate game director Morgan Day back in May to point to quests rewarding players with all rewards. "Quest will continue to grant the transmog and should be retroactive," Morgan said when asked about cross-armor type rewards, but it now seems like developer was speaking more about general armor transmog instead.

World of Warcraft: The War Within finally launches later this month on August 26, and Blizzard already said it's making big changes to the Radiant Echoes event so that it spawns more regularly, and in multiple locations.

Months after Xbot shut down lean teams, Microsoft reportedly forms a "smaller" studio to create AA games based on Blizzard IP.

<![CDATA[ The devs behind the acclaimed Metroidvania Blasphemous are teasing something new coming Fall 2024, and no one knows if it's another sequel, DLC, or something else ]]> The devs behind Blasphemous and Blasphemous 2 are teasing the full reveal of a new project arriving very soon, but no one on Earth seems to know what the heck it is.

For the uninitiated, both Blasphemous games are mostly well-liked side-scrolling Metroidvanias inspired by the Dark Souls series. Developer Game Kitchen released the first game in 2019 and the sequel came out just last year. In a tweet, the studio revealed another project seemingly in the same universe, with a short cinematic simply showing the Mea Culpa sword used by the protagonist in the first game. The sword was replaced by the Veredicto, Ruego Al Alba, and Sarmiento & Centella weapons in the sequel.

"The bells toll again, Penitent One. Your patience has been a virtue, but you need not wait for much longer," reads the tweet.

I'm a little conflicted about what I think this could be. The timing of it being so close to the release of Blasphemous 2 makes me think DLC, especially since the first game has three expansions and the sequel doesn't yet have any, but the use of the sword from the first game trips up that logic somewhat. It definitely doesn't rule out Blasphemous 2 DLC, but it's enough to make me not want to say with any degree of confidence what's being teased here.

I have to admit it's absolutely tickling me watching the devs absolutely starve players desperate for more information using incredibly cryptic in-canon language. In response to one player asking about the appearance of the Mea Culpa and inexplicably lamenting potential new content, the official Blasphemous Twitter account said: "And so I fear...That THY Penance is far from over."

We'll know more when we know more, I suppose.

<![CDATA[ Star Wars Outlaws doesn't let you kill or steal from friendly civilians, and just like that my hopes of GTA in space have been dashed ]]> A bunch of new Star Wars Outlaws details have surfaced, and while most of them are very exciting, there's one I'm just a little bummed out about.

Gaming content creator JorRaptor recently was able to spend four hours playing Star Wars Outlaws and graciously lent us his insights both in video form and in a comprehensive list on Twitter. There's a lot of juicy info there, but the very first line made me go, "ah darn, that would've been cool."

According to JorRaptor, there's no way to kill or even steal from friendly civilians, event though the game is named, you know, Star Wars Outlaws. I know there's bounty hunting in the game and a reputation system that can lead to some GTA-style chases, but alas, robbing and killing innocent civilians aren't among the crimes you can commit and be held accountable for.

We also spent four hours playing Star Wars Outlaws recently and, somewhat ironically, said it feels like Red Dead Redemption in space, which I suppose is a more fitting description seeing as how game director Mathias Karlson described it as a "full spectrum fantasy" of the "thief, gunslinger, and resourceful underdog".

Regardless of all of this, Dustin seemed to really enjoy his time with Star Wars Outlaws, saying it's "the least Ubisoft-feeling Ubisoft game" he's played in ages.

"By the end of my four hours with Star Wars Outlaws, all I wanted to do was play more," he said. "I've found myself growing increasingly burnt out on open world games over the years, but this open world feels like one of the most complete and coherent I've seen in ages. I'll need a lot more time with Outlaws to know how it measures up against incredible games like Red Dead Redemption and Ghost of Tsushima, but the fact that it's reminding me so strongly of them is a good thing indeed."

While we wait for Star Wars Outlaws to launch on August 31, here are the best open world games to play today.

<![CDATA[ Another one of Marvel's non-canonical sidekicks from the New Champions is coming to the Marvel Universe in Scarlet Witch's new student Amaranth ]]> Remember Marvel's New Champions? That's the new crop of sidekicks and proteges for A-list heroes who debuted across non-canonical variant covers for many of Marvel's titles in 2023. Well, another one of the young heroes is making the leap from What If? style imagineering to the actual comic book page, this time in the core Marvel Universe.

In this case, Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, is taking on a new student in the mystic arts, and it's none other than Amaranth, the "New Champion" who first debuted on a variant cover 2023's Scarlet Witch #9 (part of the previous volume of the title) by artist Jen Bartel.

Amaranth is coming to the Marvel Universe in November's Scarlet Witch #6 by writer Steve Orlando and artist Lorenzo Tammetta, and she's bringing Wanda's own teacher Agatha Harkness with her.

Here's a gallery of covers of Scarlet Witch #9 by Russell Dauterman, Meghan Hetrick, Iván Talavera, and Leirix:

"INTRODUCING AMARANTH!" reads Marvel's official description of Scarlet Witch #9. "The Scarlet Witch takes on a mysterious new pupil – at Agatha Harkness’ request. But where did the young sorceress known as Amaranth come from? And what could have spooked Agatha into giving up the chance to mentor her?"

Amaranth will actually be the second New Champion to make it into comics after debuting on a variant cover, with the first being Maystorm of Ultimate X-Men. However, Amaranth will have the distinction of being the first to come to the core Marvel Universe.

"Ever since she debuted in Jen Bartel's gorgeous variant cover, I've been intrigued by Amaranth. Who was she? What was her story - no, her mystery?" says writer Steve Orlando in a statement accompanying the announcement. "So, when the chance came to bring her into Scarlet Witch and explore those questions with the rest of the creative team, I leapt."

"Bringing Amaranth through the Last Door gives us a chance to upend Wanda's dynamic with a scenario where Wanda's faced with a powerful, mysterious being she struggles to figure out - an inverse of her own dynamic earlier in her life," Orlando continues. "Amaranth's unique gifts hint towards an auspicious parentage and impressive power, but her life has been tinged with tragedy. There might be no one in the Marvel Universe that can help her, but if there was one - it would be the Scarlet Witch."

Who might be hinted at by Amaranth's "auspicious parentage?" Well, if we had to take a wild guess, we'd say maybe perhaps Agatha Harkness herself? Amaranth Harkness does have a certain ring to it… And she's also wearing Agatha's signature purple color.

We'll learn more when Scarlet Witch goes on sale on November 20.

<![CDATA[ Bandai Namco says some obscure action-RPG called Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree "was a hit" that made a ton of money ]]> Hold onto your seats, folks, Elden Ring's universally acclaimed Shadow of the Erdtree DLC that everybody has been raving about for weeks sold really well.

As revealed in Elden Ring publisher Bandai Namco's first quarter financial results, Shadow of the Erdtree boosted the company's digital operating profit in its entertainment sector by 553% year-over-year, enough to prompt this ecstatic, over-the-top reaction in the document: "On the business side, Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, the major downloadable content of the home console game Elden Ring, was a hit, contributing to the operating results in the Digital Business."

Elsewhere in the results summary, Bandai Namco showed a 24.8% increase in net sales and a 56.3% rise in profit for the three months that ended on June 30, 2024. It's no coincidence that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree released about a week prior on June 21.

Of course, none of this is a surprise. Shadow of the Erdtree was an instant success at launch, beating giant full-game releases like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in ratings and selling five million units in its first three days. The DLC's success rivals some of the biggest DLC releases of all time, including Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine. As soon as it became the highest rated DLC for an RPG ever, CDPR even congratulated Bandai Namco with some awesome custom art of Geralt in Elden Ring.

In a different type of numbers game, this Elden Ring sicko takes the limiters off NG+ scaling, cranks Shadow of the Erdtree to NG+ 1,000 and still no-hits a 500,000-HP Messmer.

<![CDATA[ Amazing Spider-Man #55 pits Peter Parker against his greatest enemy - an awkward date ]]> Amazing Spider-Man #55 is on the way, and it also marks the legacy numbered Amazing Spider-Man #949. With the landmark Amazing Spider-Man #950 just around the corner, #55/949 is setting the stage by putting Peter Parker into one of the few situations where he's the most vulnerable: trying to get in the good graces of his date Shay Marken, who he's blown it with several times already.

We've got a preview of Amazing Spider-Man #55/949, written by Zeb Wells with guest artist Emilio Laiso, color artist Bryan Valenza, and letterer Joe Caramagna, in which Shay completely reads Peter for filth for being late for yet another date - this time because he was fighting an all-new Stilt-Man, who manages to give him a big, ugly black eye.

Check it out, along with the issue's main cover by John Romita, Jr.:

"The last arc nearly killed Spider-Man (others weren't so lucky)," reads Marvel's official description of Amazing Spider-Man #55. "Peter hopes to take a breath but gets a new challenge to face in this, the 949th legacy issue of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN! This is the last domino to fall as we head into our next big centennial!"

Amazing Spider-Man just wrapped up the story of the Spider-Goblin, in which Peter Parker became possessed by the essence of Norman Osborn's dark side, the Green Goblin, which concluded with both Peter and Osborn now free of the Goblin.

With one final arc left in writer Zeb Wells' time on the title before a new creative team comes in, Spidey is getting ready to square off with Tombstone, the new big boss of New York's crime syndicates, in a clash that's been building since the start of the current volume of Amazing Spider-Man.

Amazing Spider-Man #55/949 goes on sale August 14.

Stay up to date on all the new Spider-Man comics Marvel has planned for release.

<![CDATA[ One of the best indie action-RPGs of the past decade is getting a Kingdom Hearts-inspired follow-up that builds "on top of the best aspects," and it sure is pretty ]]>

Remember CrossCode, the 2018 indie action-RPG from Radical Fish Games with great combat and puzzles? Well, the same studio is making a follow-up that looks even better.

Radical Fish Games has revealed Alabaster Dawn with a shockingly pretty trailer that showcases the studio's knack for creating 2.5D pixel art worlds teeming with as much life and vibrancy as any full 3D AAA game. The studio describes the follow-up as "an Action RPG that builds on the best aspects" of CrossCode, and yet again we're being treated to a "deep combat system, challenging puzzles, and a mysterious world teeming with secrets, all bundled up in an engaging story."

Not much is known about the story at this juncture, but it's definitely distinct from CrossCode if not set in an entirely different universe. Whereas CrossCode takes place primarily inside a fictional MMORPG, Alabaster Dawn centers around a hero named Juno chosen to bring back the former glory of a ruined world she once called her home.

Radical Fish promises a "massive adventure" with 30-60 hours of playtime and seven unique areas to explore. Combat is inspired by Kingdom Hearts and Devil May Cry, and just from the trailer you can see a variety of combos, ranged and melee attacks, and abilities.

There are also eight distinct weapons that can be slotted into any one of four elements at any point throughout your playthrough, and then there are gems you can add to your weapons to unlock enchantments, which can range from basic stat buffs to more targeted bonuses that change the way you engage enemies.

You'll also be able to unlock various combat arts for each weapon's skill tree, and yes, there's a different skill tree for each weapon. Adding to the depth of combat are divine arts, which can be equipped to each element to unlock special spells for taking on the heartiest of foes.

Meanwhile, healing is built into the game's cooking system, whereby you cook all sorts of dishes at resting spots to increase your stock of healing bulbs and unlock temporary buffs. And every time you cook, you increase something called your Palate Level, which further enhances the effects of everything you cook going forward.

Basically, Alabaster Dawn looks like a sequel to CrossCode in all but name, even if it doesn't take place in the same universe. And I mean that as the highest possible compliment. There's no word on a release date yet, but judging from the encouragingly polished gameplay shown in the trailer, it might not be too far off.

Here are all of the upcoming indie games we can't wait to play.

<![CDATA[ Risk of Rain 2 lead says new owner Gearbox has done right by the roguelike icon: "What Gearbox has allowed us to do and create has been incredibly exciting and fun" ]]> Risk of Rain 2 was published by Gearbox Publishing, and Gearbox Entertainment bought the Risk of Rain IP outright in 2022. The first Gearbox Software-led Risk of Rain 2 DLC, Seekers of the Storm, is on the horizon, and as it resurfaces after a few quiet years, the game's new design lead is optimistic about Gearbox's plans for the IP.

"I love that Gearbox has allowed us to have this small team to capture that indie feel," design lead Bruno Fontanetti says in an interview with GamesRadar+. "I feel like if we had expanded into a huge team, it would have been harder to carry on the spirit of this thing."

Risk of Rain was created by the two co-founders of original developer Hopoo Games and has since become a modern pillar of roguelikes, especially after Risk of Rain 2 grew into such a co-op hit. One of the first things Gearbox did with the IP was plan a free-to-play mobile spinoff at an external studio which honestly didn't look terrible but ended up getting canceled before it was finished, which didn't fill a lot of Risk of Rain fans with confidence.

With Seekers of the Storm, Gearbox can demonstrate its dedication to Risk of Rain 2, easily the biggest game in the series, and its handling of the IP as a whole. Fontanetti, who wears several hats on the new, slightly larger but still small Risk of Rain 2 dev team, says the company has been supportive and engaged and has plans for the future.

"I am super excited for the franchise going forward," Fontanetti affirms. "What Gearbox has allowed us to do and create so far has been incredibly exciting and fun for the team. Every day has been this huge privilege, and it's just a load of fun to work with this IP particularly and the people that are on it. I feel like the future is bright for Risk of Rain and I think fans are gonna really enjoy what we've been working on. I can tell you Gearbox is very interested in continuing this franchise and making more stuff that the fans are going to enjoy. They've really allowed us to continue that spirit."

Risk of Rain 2 is getting a game-changing new character, a monk-inspired healer called the Seeker, and we've got all the details.

<![CDATA[ Director of new R-rated Hellboy movie says he approached it like a Stephen King adaptation: "It’s a horror story" ]]> Hellboy is going full horror in new adaptation, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, an R-rated reimagining of Mike Mignola's comic books.

This time around, Jack Kesy dons the iconic prosthetics to play the superpowered demon based on the limited series of the same name. Set in the '50s, it follows Hellboy in rural Appalachia as he finds himself mixed up with a small community haunted by witches. Controlling the malevolence is a devil-like figure called the Crooked Man.

The early trailers have teased the dark tone of the new reboot, as well as leaning into the scares. "It's a horror story, it’s a horror film – it’s very simple," director Brian Taylor told GamesRadar+ at San Diego Comic-Con recently.

"I took to this like, 'This is an adaptation. I'm adapting the story the way I would adapt a Stephen King story, it's all there in the texts. I'm just gonna execute it with as much love and care as we can.' I think fans of the original comic book are gonna love this. I know already like there's people online who’ve seen the teasers and things like that and they're like, 'This is the comic.' That’s what we want."

Taylor also explained that it was important to keep The Crooked Man separate from what we've seen on screen before. After all, Hellboy has been adapted several times before, including three-live action movies, Hellboy (2004) and its sequel The Golden Army (2008), and the 2019 reboot film Hellboy.

"I knew we weren't gonna be referential to the other films at all, they're their own thing," Taylor added. "They're great but this is not a this is not a space opera, right? It’s a folklore story, it’s contained. It's an attempt to make things a little simpler, I think. I kind of feel like movies have got really, really complicated. And we're talking about this I mean, movies nowadays, it's like two or three hours long and an hour of that people explaining things and I still don't understand it."

The director, previously best known for his work on Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, continued: "It makes me tired. I think a beautiful folk horror story is a simple thing, and that's how we approached it."

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is due to be released in 2024. For more upcoming movies, check out our breakdown of 2024 release dates and new superhero movies on the way.
